All lessons are based on the 5th grade Common Core and Essential Standards 

What your student will be learning this year in…

Math

  • Number Sense & Operations – add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • Measurement – Metric & Customary and converting between systems
  • Geometry – Understanding the classification of polygons & finding missing angles of triangles & quadrilaterals
  • Data Analysis & Probability – make and read graphs especially line graphs, collect and analyze data
  • Algebra – solving one step inequalities

ELA

  • Grammar & Spelling
  • Fluency & Comprehension – All genres of literature, comprehension strategies, novel studies

Science

  • Matter and Energy - understanding the interactions and the changes that occur
  • Weather – water cycle, weather patterns, cloud types
  • Force & Motion – basic physics concepts, Newton’s Laws of Motion, simple machines,
  • Ecosystems – communities’ organisms and their interdependency and how materials in nature are recycled
  • Body Systems - understanding the different body systems and and identify their functions and parts
  • Genetics & Evolution - why organisms are similar/different from their parent organisms

Social Studies

  • Students are learning about the western hemisphere focusing primarily on the United States, Canada & Mexico. Topics that we will cover will include: Geography, Human & Environmental Actions, Movement of people and goods, location, place and region.

Fun ideas to help your student at home…

  • Make Something - Have your student plan and cook a meal. 
  • Plan a Trip – Have your student look at maps and plan the best route, calculate distances, and driving time. 
  • Discussion –Talk to your child about current issues in the local and national news.
  • Black Out – Have a planned time where all TVs, video games, and computers are turned off. The whole family can play board games and/or read together or individually.
  • Educational TV Night – Plan to watch an educational TV program together and discuss it. (National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery, History)
  • Basic Mental Math Facts – Drill students on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Use Flash cards, placemats, and songs.   
  • Books on tape/CD – Listen to books on tape in the car. Old radio shows are fun too! These can be borrowed from the public library and rented at Cracker Barrel.
