Procedures & Expectations for Mrs. Katz’s Class
Behavior
Students are expected to show above the line behavior (be respectful, participate in class lessons, complete assignments, and follow the teachers directions) throughout the school day. Students are not to create problems in the learning environment. If a student causes a problem he/she will be ask to solve it. If he/she cannot solve the problem, or chooses not to, I will do something about it. What I do depends on the problem and the situation. If you feel something is unfair, find an appropriate time to whisper to me “I’m not sure that is fair” and we will find a time to discuss it.
Grades
Tests, quizzes, projects, classwork, homework, and class participation are all tools used to assess students for report cards. I also categorize and weight the grades.
Homework
Homework will be reviewed in class and/or graded. Students are expected write homework in their agenda in class. Students are usually given time to start on homework in class and are encouraged to take it home even if they finish it at school. Students are not allowed to turn in homework without taking it home first. Feel free to help your student with homework but they must do the thinking and writing. Homework passes are used as incentives and rewards for students. Students must staple the pass to the assignment and turn it in with their name on it. The assignment will be excused from the student's grade.
Student Agenda
All students must have and use the KIS Student Agenda DAILY. The agenda will go home and return to school with the student every day. The student is responsible for writing homework in the agenda and showing the agenda to his/her parent/guardian regularly. Parents may use the agenda as a means of written communication between the teacher and the student throughout the year. When students are unpacking in the morning and packing up in the afternoon they must have their agenda open to the correct week for the teacher to do a quick check.
Late work & missing assignments
Late work is not acceptable and will not be able to receive 100% unless the student was absent from class. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for missing assignments.
Absences
It is important for students to be present for all lessons. Most activities cannot be duplicated at home so please make sure that your student is healthy and present every day! If a student is absent from the room it is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher what was missed and turn it in within a reasonable amount of time for the number of absences.
Coming in class
In the morning students are to come in the room quietly, unpack at their desk, and prepare for the day. This includes sharpening pencils and reading and completing the directions on the board. When returning to the room during the school day, students are to come in the class quietly, have a seat at their desk, and read until otherwise instructed.
Working at your desk
Students are to work quietly at their desk unless instructed otherwise. If a student has a question they are to raise their hand. Students are to be “ON-TASK” during work time. If a student is not on-task they are given a warning “look”. Other students are to help their classmates be on-task also. They can do this by quietly reminding the students to what to do.
Group/Partner work
During group/partner work students are to whisper. Level 1 or 2 voice only. All group members must be polite, courteous, on task, and participate.
Turning in finished work (down time)
Finished work goes in the proper box on the correct due date. If you have finished work you may read or write at your desk at a voice level 0 unless you have permission to do otherwise.
Transitions and passing out materials
During transitions students are to read or sit quietly at a level 0 unless the teacher gives other directions. Students must be prepared with materials needed for each class every day.
Talking
|
KIS Voice Levels
0 = Silence
1 = Whisper
2 = Quiet talking
3 = Teaching/Presenting
4 = Outside
|
Students are not to talk unless they raise their hand and are addressed by the teacher. There are appropriate times to talk (group work and “talk time”). During group work or “talk time” students are to be at a voice level 1 or 2. When this time is over the teacher will signal the class by standing in front of them and saying, “OK”. At this time students will close their mouths and look at the teacher.
